The United Nations Group of Experts in Geographical Names (UNGEGN) has published a new UNGEGN Bulletin, No. 66, entitled "Geographical names supporting the international decade of indigenous languages".

This bulletin, which is issued every six months, has already been circulated to all member countries and was also posted on the UN website. Pages 19-21 include a short relevant article sent by the Chairman of the Cyprus Standing Committee for the Standardization of Geographical Names (SCENIHR) Mr. Andreas Hadjiraftis for Cyprus. Regarding the cover of the magazine, the Cypriot proposal was accepted for the twelfth consecutive time. As Mr. Hadjiraftis says in the article:

"The names of the villages of Cyprus are an important part of our geographical and cultural environment. They represent irreplaceable cultural, linguistic and environmental values of vital importance, related to the well-being and history of the people. Geographical names in Cyprus are therefore of great importance. Society has an obligation to respect the cultural heritage of geographical names and to confirm that the design and use of place names is carried out in such a way as to ensure their preservation."

All the official geographical names of Cyprus are included in the Big Toponymic Dictionary.

At this, all editions of the journal from 1988 to 2023 are listed. Previous editions still include 15 articles relating to Cyprus on other similar topics (see nos. 49, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 61, 62, 63, 64 and 65).

The Republic of Cyprus actively participates in the United Nations sessions and conferences held in New York through the President of the Permanent Committee for the Standardization of Geographical Names of Cyprus. Further details are listed on the website of MKEATGO.
