[PIO] Announcement by the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner

The murder of women, femicide, is the most extreme form of violence against women. Femicide is an extreme form of gender and sexist violence and is the result of historically unequal power relations between men and women.

The possible femicide, murder of a woman in Paphos, as presented by what has seen the light of day, is a "typical" example of systematic violence by a current or former husband or partner, resulting in femicide.

Cyprus has a fairly strong legal framework to prevent and combat violence against women and also criminalises femicide. Much has already been done with the establishment of a coordinating body for the prevention and response to violence against women, the creation of a women's house, a multidisciplinary centre, friendly to women victims of violence, where professionals with different specialties work under the same roof for the purpose of providing appropriate support to victims and their families, and training of frontline workers continues.

Where there is accountability, the Minister of Justice and Public Order has reacted immediately by calling for an investigation into responsibilities that may arise on the part of the authorities.

At the same time, however, femicide is a crime based on deeply entrenched social beliefs and gender stereotypes. This is where we are targeting and investing until the violence stops.
