A meeting was held yesterday (09/08/2024) at the offices of Lythrodonda Community Council, which was attended by the Environment Commissioner Ms Antonia Theodosiou, at the invitation of Lythrodonda Community Council. The main topic of the meeting was the proposed project for the establishment of a large-scale photovoltaic park within the administrative boundaries of the above mentioned communities.
The meeting was attended by the Environment Commissioner Ms. Antonia Theodosiou and an Officer of her Office, the President of the Mahera Complex and President of the Mathiatis Community Council, Mr. Theodoros Tsatsos, the President of the Lythrodontas Community Council, Mrs. Olivia Christoforou, member of the Lythrodontas Community Council, Mr. Therapon Antoniou, and a representative of the Analionta/Katalionta Community Council.
During the meeting, the views of the Mahera Complex, and in particular of the three directly affected Community Authorities (Lythrodonda, Mathiatis and Analionta/Katalionta) were presented. Information was provided and views were exchanged on the proposal to construct and operate a 180MW photovoltaic park and 40MW energy storage units, which is proposed to be erected on state-owned land, the majority of which has a total area of 3,500 decares.
The local authorities have expressed their views and concerns and their opposition to the construction of a photovoltaic park of such a large capacity, for reasons relating both to the size of the park and the huge area of land it will occupy, and to the thousands of trees that will have to be felled, the agricultural land that the area would be deprived of, the change in the character of the natural landscape, the negative impact on an adjacent farm because of the high temperatures that would develop (due to the felling of trees and/or the operation of the park) and, above all, as they have indicated, the negative impact on the habitats of the area.
Similar views were expressed by the Environment Commissioner's Office regarding the impact on the environment.
A site visit to the area proposed for construction of this project followed, where it was noted: The pine trees do not have pitch pine, there are pine trees of various ages which also proves that the pine forest is healthy, olive groves, fertile agricultural land being cultivated as well as very remarkable geomorphs such as hills with pillow lava. Birds of prey and cranes were also sighted.
An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Supplementary Study has been submitted to the Environmental Authority for the proposed project and the project will remain open for consultation until 24/08/2024. Views from any interested party can be submitted online by this date at website of the Department of Environment which includes information on projects that have been submitted to the Environmental Authority under the Environmental Impact Assessment of Certain Projects Act N127(I)2018.
