The Office of the Environment Commissioner has received numerous complaints over the past year regarding the beaches Faros and Ammos of the Pervolions Community and now the Municipality of Dromolaxia-Meneos, in Larnaca District.
In summary, the complaints mainly concerned. [*]Disturbance from loud music and lighting during the evening hours. [*]Uninspected electrical installations and generators for the operation of the bars and their refrigerators for the sale of drinks. [*]Entrance and movement of vehicles to the beach through access reserved for use by disabled persons, ambulances and for beach cleaning purposes only. It should be noted that turtles spawn sporadically on the adjacent beaches during this period and there are already several cages placed by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research. [*]Entry and movement of motor vehicles for launching sea scooters. [*]Absence of a lifeguard tower and non-employment of a lifeguard at the organized beach Sand. [*]Cleaning of the beach in the presence of bathers by mechanical means which may also scrape the sand. [*]Moving and stacking pebbles at the back of the beach every year to make the sandy substrate of the beach appear sandy. [*]Waste water leakage from adjacent housing estates.
An officer from the Office of the Environment Commissioner carried out a site visit in conjunction with the Local Authority concerned and the Department of Fisheries and subsequently informed all relevant agencies in writing regarding the above findings. The Mayor of Dromolaxia-Meneos immediately convened a meeting in which the Larnaca District Administration and competent Services participated, for information and corrective measures.
Subsequently, instructions were given by the Prefect of Larnaca for the dismantling (after a warning) of the two kiosks selling drinks and for taking legal action against the owners of the other two in cooperation with the EIA. At the same time, the Department of Electromechanical Services proceeded with the confiscation of the electricity generators, and the Department of Environment took up the issue of sewage leakage and gave the necessary warnings.
The Office of the Commissioner for the Environment will continue, in cooperation with the relevant Departments, to monitor the rectification of all the above problems for the good of the environment as well as for the safety and welfare of the citizens.
