On Saturday 12 March 2022, at 11.00 a.m, His Eminence Metropolitan Nektarios of Kition will preside over a service at the Church of St. Lazarus in Larnaca on the occasion of the burial of the remains of the youngest EOKA hero Dimitrakis Dimitriadis. The burial of the hero's remains will follow at the cemetery of Agios Georgios (Kontou) in Larnaca.
The young hero Dimitrakis Dimitriadis was shot and killed by an English soldier during a student demonstration in the area of Agios Lazaros on 14 March 1956.
Dimitrakis' family, in a written request, appealed to the Commissioner for the Presidency a few months ago to locate his remains, which for so many years they did not know where they were after his body was buried in March 1956 under very difficult circumstances.
The remains were found in multiple graves in the cemetery of Agios Georgios Kontos and were identified using the DNA method at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics by the team of geneticists of Professor Dr. Marios Kariolou.
The identified remains of Dimitrakis will be buried in an individual grave provided, honorary, by the Metropolis of Kition.
Speakers at the ceremony will be the Commissioner of the Presidency Mr. Fotis Fotiou, a member of the hero's family, as well as a representative of the Association of Fighters of EOKA 1955-59.
