[PIO] Announcement by the Ministry of Social Welfare in relation to an Internet publication (dated 16/7/2024)

Following an article in the online media outlet Themaonline dated. 16/7/2024 entitled "If you are a child under 18 press 1", the Ministry of Social Welfare clarifies the following.

The telephone lines mentioned in the article, namely 22873200 and the four-digit number 1440 , do not belong to the Ministry of Social Welfare, nor are they answered by officials of the Social Welfare Services.

Specifically, the line 22873200 belongs to the Office of the Commissioner for the Protection of Children's Rights and the line 1440 belongs to the Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence Against the Family (APVF).

HCPs respond immediately to incidents, both during Public Service hours and outside of Public Service hours, under a specific manual of interagency procedures for family violence between HCPs, Police, Mental Health Services and other relevant agencies.

Cooperation with all agencies involved, as well as with the Office of the Commissioner for the Protection of Children's Rights and SPAVO, has been seamless.

With regard to the incident described in the publication, the HCPs have not received any information, and in contact with both the Commissioner's Office and SPAVO we have received assurances that the telephone lines are functioning normally.

In relation to personal data, for the case in question, the Ministry of Social Welfare contacted the author of the publication and received all the necessary information to handle the incident.
