[PIO] Announcement by the Ministry of Health on new cases of COVID-19 - 8 January 2022

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 8 January 2022:

- 4 people died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 654.

- 244 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of whom 83 are in serious condition. A proportion of 77.05% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 18 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 152,238 PCR and antigen rapid tests have been performed.

- 3,959 (positivity rate: 2.6%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 201,360.

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 4 persons who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 were:

- Female, aged 97 years, who died on 8 January at Larnaca General Hospital.

- Male, aged 63 years, who died on 8 January at Larnaca General Hospital

- Male, aged 82 years, who died on 8 January at Famagusta General Hospital.

- Female, aged 82, who died on 8 January at Famagusta General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 654, of which:

- 413 men (63.1%), and

- 241 women (36.9%).

The average age of those who died from the disease is 76 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 244 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 83 are in serious condition or in PICU.

Of the 83 patients in serious condition, 26 are intubated, 7 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit outside of a ventilator and 50 in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 152,238 diagnoses made, 14,243 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 137,995 by the antigen rapid test, 3,959 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 153 cases from 1,065 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  2. 72 cases out of 4,062 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  3. 767 cases out of 8,534 samples taken through private initiative.
  4. 31 cases out of 452 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  5. 1,681 cases from 73,232 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  6. 1,252 cases out of 64,763 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
  7. 3 cases from 130 specimens obtained under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
