[PIO] Announcement by the Ministry of Health on new cases of COVID-19 - 25 January 2022

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 25 January 2022:

- 3 deaths were announced from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 716.

- 223 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 71 are in serious condition. A proportion of 73.43% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 25 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 99,308 PCR and antigen rapid tests have been performed.

- 2,546 (positivity rate: 2.56%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 241,319.

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 3 deaths announced with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 are:

- Female, aged 86 years, who died on 24 January at Famagusta General Hospital

- Female, aged 85 years, who died on 25 January at Paphos General Hospital.

- Male, aged 88, who died on 25 January at Limassol General Hospital.

Consequently, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 716, of which:

- 448 males (62.6%), and

- 268 females (37.4%).

The average age of those who died from the disease is 76.1 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 223 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 71 are in serious condition or in PICU.

Of the 71 patients in serious condition, 27 are intubated, 5 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) off ventilator and 39 in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):

Of the 99,308 diagnoses performed, 6,465 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 92,843 by the antigen rapid test, 2,546 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 105 cases from 543 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  2. 70 cases out of 2,286 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  3. 341 cases out of 3,175 samples taken through private initiative.
  4. 19 cases out of 324 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  5. 1,186 cases from 41,718 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  6. 830 cases out of 51,125 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.

In addition, the following tests were performed without detecting a case:

  1. 0 cases from 192 specimens obtained under the Personal Physician Referral and Special Group Screening Program through the Public Health Clinics.
