Legislation Commissioner Louisa Christodoulides - Zannetou welcomes yesterday's decision of the Council of Ministers to approve the Code of Conduct for Members of the Government. The Code was drafted by the Commissioner for Legislation, on the instructions of the President of the Republic, to implement the relevant recommendation of the GRECO Commission in its Evaluation Report of Cyprus on the Prevention of Corruption and Promotion of Integrity in Central Governments and Law Enforcement Agencies (5th Round Evaluation, 2023).

In drafting the Code, the Law Commissioner undertook an extensive study of similar texts adopted in other states and in international and European organisations on the prevention of corruption among persons exercising senior executive functions. It also took into account the laws in force in the Republic concerning the duties and obligations of Government officials.

The Code contains specific rules of conduct that must govern the behaviour of members of the Government in the performance of their duties. At the same time, it establishes the principles of selflessness, integrity, meritocracy, impartiality, honesty, confidentiality, objectivity, honesty, responsibility and due diligence as fundamental in the performance of the duties of the members of the Government, in order to ensure good governance in the Republic of Cyprus.

The Law Commissioner is confident that the adoption of the Code is an important step in preventing corruption and strengthening the rule of law, transparency and accountability. Finally, the Law Commissioner would like to thank the Presidency of the Republic, as well as the Legal Service, for their excellent cooperation during the drafting of the Code.
