The great suffering suffered by our stranded and resettled patients and students at the Agios Dometios barrier, who live in our occupied villages, attend schools in the free areas and come and go daily through the crossing point of Agios Dometios, is a thing of the past.

In a statement, the Head of Humanitarian Affairs for Missing and Trapped Persons Ms. Anna Aristotelous pointed out: "In the context of the human-centred policy of the President's Governance Programme, following an assessment of the existing situation and with the aim of facilitating the children and patients, an effective settlement of the issue has been achieved."

Referring to the importance of the issue, Ms. Aristotelous expressed her thanks to the Deputy Minister of European Affairs Ms. Marilena Raouna, the Cyprus Negotiator Mr. Menelaos Menelaou and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their excellent cooperation in resolving this long-standing, serious humanitarian problem.

She stressed: "Our aim is to make life easier for the people who have chosen to stay in our occupied villages despite the adversities and problems. It is very important to provide support and care, especially to our elderly interned and resettled people who are facing medical problems, but also to recognize their sacrifices for so many years to keep our occupied villages alive under occupation. It is also important to facilitate the lives of children residing in our occupied villages."

As Ms. Aristotelous explained, the facilitation will be effective immediately and passage will be through a special lane for vehicles in which parents will transport their children, attending schools in the free areas, to their homes in our occupied villages and in particular in the occupied Kormakitis. It will also apply to stranded and resettled patients from Rizokarpaso, Agia Triada, Agios Andronikos, Kormakitis and Karpasia who visit hospitals in the free areas by bus and are subjected to very great inconvenience and delay on their return to the occupied areas, since the delay time is added to the already long distance travelled by our elderly compatriots.

According to Ms. Aristotelous, complaints were expressed by residents mainly of Kormakitis, referring to the excessive delay they suffer at the crossing point of Agios Dometios, where they suffer daily to transport their children from schools in the free areas back to their occupied village, since several times they were forced to wait for hours to cross.

The Head of Humanitarian Affairs pointed out that the excessive delay worked against the children's productive time, as it created a problem in allocating the time available for students to study and prepare for the next day, and deprived them of any participation in other activities, to the detriment of the children's well-being.
