The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFA), Terra Cypria and the Department of Environment of the British Bases proceeded with the release and reintroduction of a sea turtle into its natural habitat on Friday 26 July 2024.

The release took place at the Cyprus Marine Aquaculture Research Centre (CMARC), which also functions as a First Aid, Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre for injured and sick sea turtles.

Lucy, as the sea turtle in question was named, is a green turtle (Chelonia mydas), which was recently found by the British Bases Environment Department sick and exhausted in the Limassol Curium. After remaining for about two months at the Sea Turtle Rescue Centre at the Sea Turtle Sanctuary of the TATH for treatment, it can now swim freely in the marine environment again.

The release was attended by people involved in water sports in the area. On the occasion of the release the participants were informed about the sea turtles that exist in Cyprus and the behaviour that should be shown towards them. They were also informed about the actions to be taken in case an injured turtle is found, as well as about the importance of the Natura 2000 network, especially with regard to the protection of sea turtles.

The release and reintroduction of the sea turtle into its natural environment took place in the framework of the "Pandoteira" project. The project deals with the management of the Natura 2000 network in Cyprus and aims to make the network more efficient, functional and sustainable. It is co-funded by the LIFE Programme of the European Union, coordinated by the Department of Environment, while 13 other partner organisations from Government Departments, University Institutions, Non-Profit Organisations and private companies participate in the project.
