The Cyprus Ports Authority has proceeded with the installation and operation of a second radar at the southern shelter of the New Port of Limassol, in order to maximise the capabilities and efficiency of the operations of the Navigation Monitoring Station in the port and wider Limassol area. The new radar has been interconnected with the existing Maritime Surveillance Systems of the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, in accordance with the Integrated Maritime Policy of the European Union, in the framework of the implementation of the strategy for the Common Information Sharing Environment for the maritime sector.
The Authority, within the framework of its regulatory role, remains dynamically alert, ensuring the proper operation and efficiency of port services and the safety of navigation in general. It is noted that any vessel within a Port Area is subject to the Authority's instructions in relation to its draught, position, speed, direction, means and method of movement as it participates and uses the Authority's Vessel Navigation Services on the assigned frequencies.
It is stressed that the Maritime Traffic Monitoring equipment is used for the safety of navigation, prevention of marine pollution and protection of the environment, monitoring and management of vessel traffic and avoidance of accidents, facilitation of the vessel navigation process, as well as control and supervision of vessel docking, principles and procedures which are of the highest priority for the Authority.
