I have received, by letter from the Attorney General of the Republic dated 30 January 2024, the legal advice of the Legal Service on the issues raised by the Auditor General of the Republic regarding the suspension of the payment of the pensions of officials.
This letter states that: " ... by this handling, the administration has helped to ensure that the Republic does not have to bear unjustified legal costs since if the suspension of pension payments had continued ..., the success of the applicants would have been a foregone conclusion," and concludes that: "...the General Accounting Office, following the legal guidance of its constitutional legal adviser, correctly terminated the suspension of the payment of the officials' pension ..."
The General Accounting Office of the Republic, with a view to streamlining the regulatory framework while ensuring the constitutionality of any changes, has contributed to the preparation of the relevant bills of the Ministry of Finance for the final regulation of the issue of multiple pensions through legislative measures.
Following the principle of good administration and always with a view to serving the public interest, the General Accounting Office of the Republic will continue to legitimately perform its constitutional role and effectively exercise its duties arising from the current legislative and regulatory framework.
