The Council of Ministers today approved the bill entitled: "The Gender Equality and Related Matters Commissioner Act 2024."

The Bill seeks to establish the Gender Equality Commissioner and defines his/her role and responsibilities.

It is also important to legislate the role of Equality Officers in Ministries and Deputy Ministries, defining their assistance, in cooperation with the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner, in the horizontal integration of the gender dimension in public policies.

At the same time, the National Mechanism for Women's Rights is legislated and institutionalised. This is an advisory body that has existed and contributed to ensuring women's rights for the past four decades, by defining how it operates and cooperates with the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner.

The bill aims to upgrade the institution of the Gender Equality Commissioner by designating the Commissioner as responsible for the formulation and coordination of the National Strategy for Gender Equality, in cooperation with the Gender Equality Officers in the Ministries and Deputy Ministries, the promotion of gender equality and women's rights, the implementation of actions and practices aimed at integrating the gender perspective in all aspects of life.

The upgrading of the Gender Equality Commissioner has been a priority of the administration and of the President of the Republic himself. The bill approved today by the Cabinet of Ministers is the culmination of efforts to consolidate the culture of gender equality and the necessity of institutionalizing the Commissioner.
