It is with great pleasure that I participate in tonight's event, a landmark day for Nicosia General Hospital, for the inauguration of the Pancyprian Trauma Centre. A modern centre, which focuses on providing specialist care to patients, something that was lacking. You know how important it is for this kind of trauma to have an immediate response. So, the most important thing we take away from today's event is that we can respond much more quickly, with all that this entails for the lives of our fellow human beings in need.

The operation of the Centre comes to fill a gap, and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank all those who have contributed to this effort, Mrs Giannakis, the Commission and the medical staff for the results.

As I have mentioned many times - I really believe it - for us the health sector, together with that of education, are the most important sectors. They are two sectors where the State has a primary responsibility to offer all its citizens the same accessibility and, above all, quality services.

People-centred policies are the main component of our decisions and actions and I assure you that the promotion of relevant projects is high on our priorities. We consider it our duty as a State to ensure the provision of quality and specialised services to citizens and to ensure their timely access to them.

The implementation of the YESY, as one of the most important social reforms since the foundation of the Republic, has opened new paths in the provision of health services and as the Government we aim not only to preserve it, but to upgrade it, to protect it, to strengthen it even further, with our main goal - and in this effort we must work together - how to further strengthen the services offered. The operation of the centre is serving that goal, enhancing the services that are offered.

It was mentioned earlier, and I fully agree, that the State Health Services Agency (SHSA) and, by extension, our public hospitals are in for a rough ride, across the board. Growing up, I knew that all difficult cases ended up in our hospitals because only they, due to equipment and many other factors, could successfully respond. It is for this reason that we support them. The recent publication of the OMHA amendment bill, which allows funding for public hospitals to be extended for another year, was a conscious choice. So we now look forward to your internal work, precisely to get our public hospitals, which are gems, up to where they deserve to be.
