It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Presidential Palace for today's event in the framework of the celebration of the World Day of the Greek Language. Today we honour the unique Greek language and we feel proud of this carrier of our identity, of this dynamic aspect of our culture, of this priceless treasure of our long history. It is, moreover, universally accepted that the Greek language in its timelessness has the power to highlight the past, to illuminate the present and to prescribe our future.

Since 2017, the 9th of February each year has been designated as the World Hellenic Language Day and is celebrated all over the world. It is certainly not a random date. It is the day on which we commemorate with a sense of duty Dionysios Solomos, who passed away on 9 February 1857. In the context of this symbolic day, the great contribution of the Greek language to European and international culture is acknowledged throughout the world, its infinite richness is admired and its glory and timeless value is highlighted. At the same time, its connection with human thought, literature, politics, science, philosophy, theatre and other aspects of our life is highlighted, as is its decisive contribution to the upgrading of our cultural and intellectual level and to the search for the anthropocentric dimension of social life. The cultivation and strengthening of language education and the transmission to children, to our young people, of the universal values that emerge through it, contributes significantly to our efforts to upgrade our educational system, on the way, to our efforts for a modern, student-centred, inclusive school.

As I have mentioned many times, education is a top priority of our Governance, as we consider it to be the foundation for a healthy society and a key pillar of the people-centred nature of all our policies. Policies that, among other things, focus on the effective management of the challenges facing our education system - and we must admit that it faces serious challenges - and on creating a school that embraces all our children, nurturing their knowledge and skills, bringing out their talents and aptitudes, so that they are empowered, literate and resilient to meet the diverse needs of modern times.

And if we really want to honour the Greek language, certainly events like today's are important, but I think it is more important to do so through our actions and energies and not to limit ourselves to events.

Especially when it comes to our language and recognising the value and importance of our language, and recognising the value and importance of our language, we have already undertaken a series of actions aimed at the modernisation of the Cypriot education system.

In this context, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth has set as a primary objective the empowerment of our students in order to cultivate their language skills, especially in relation to the understanding and correct use of the Greek language.

In this context, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth has set as a primary objective the empowerment of our students in order to cultivate their language skills, especially in relation to the understanding and correct use of the Greek language. In her statement, the Minister will provide more and more specific information on the Ministry's actions to achieve the objective of upgrading the Greek language, on the basis of the Governance Programme.

As a State, as a society, especially in the case of Cyprus, a country under occupation - this year marks 50 years since the Turkish invasion, 50 years of ongoing occupation - we have a duty to contribute to the upgrading and strengthening of the language education we offer to our young people, the citizens of tomorrow. We are therefore called upon to appreciate the spiritual greatness, timelessness, universality, power, authenticity and beauty of the Greek language and to contribute to its preservation and promotion, not just with words but with concrete actions.

After all, the Greek language is an integral part of our identity, it is the way that determines not only our communication but also our thoughts, our feelings, our dreams. It is the means of understanding the world around us, the conduit of values that feeds the global foundations of civilization. It is one of our most precious assets, with timeless value and international resonance and influence.

In closing, I would like to express once again my thanks to those who worked for the organization of today's event, as well as to the Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus Mr. Ioannis Papameletiou and the President of the Greek Language Centre Mr. Theodoros Papaggelis for their cooperation and their response to our invitation to celebrate the Greek language.
