We will do everything possible so that 2024 is the year of the liberation and reunification of our country, President of the Republic Mr. Nikos Christodoulides.
In his greeting at the New Year's cake cutting event at RIK, the President of the Republic, after expressing his best wishes for 2024, said: "May it be a good and blessed year," he added: "2024 is a significant year for our country.
It is 50 years since the brutal Turkish invasion, 50 years of ongoing occupation, and on the occasion of recent developments, as a result of our own intense efforts, with the announcement of the appointment of the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General, whom we expect in Cyprus, we will do everything possible so that 2024 - and I really believe that if there is political will - will be the year of liberation and reunification of our homeland."
President Christodoulides also noted that: "At the same time, 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the most important success of the Republic of Cyprus since the day of its foundation, our accession to the European Union (EU) in 2004. And on the occasion of the fact that we have already started discussions in Brussels about the future of Europe - on the occasion of the electoral process for the election of new members of the European Parliament, which will lead to the composition of the new Commission and the new Council, and the fact that we have already started preparing for the second Presidency of the Council of the EU, which will be in the first half of 2026 - to come even closer as a state to the EU, through specific actions, through specific policies, both in our foreign policy and in our foreign policy. We are demonstrating in practice, both in our external behaviour and in our internal behaviour, where we really belong."
He went on to say: "I see here the President of the Parliament and representatives of all parliamentary parties, to wish them a good election year, it is again an election year both for the European elections and for the election of local government members.
As the Government, we have been called upon to implement the reform of local government, a big gamble which I am sure that through cooperation we will succeed.
On the occasion of the 2024 election year, I address a message to everyone, to all parliamentary parties, about the readiness of the executive, in practice, to cooperate together.
On the occasion of the 2024 election year, I address a message to all, to all parliamentary parties, about the readiness of the executive, in practice, to cooperate together. The problems we face and the challenges we face are neither partisan nor ideological, and it is only through cooperation that we will be able to meet the expectations of the Cypriot people. My weakness in the journalistic world has been a given since 2014, when I was appointed Government Spokesperson, and I am sure that this weakness is strengthened even more as time goes by through cooperation, through respect for your work, your function, a very important function in a democratic country. Let us all work together in order to meet the expectations of the Cypriot people.
