In the address of the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Mr. The importance of the protection of workers with commitment to the safeguarding of basic labour rights and respect for the principles of social justice and social dialogue was mentioned and it was stressed that they are a long-standing priority of the Ministry of Labour. At the same time, the constructive role played by the Guild of Municipal, Municipal and Community Employees of Cyprus, SIDHEKEK PEO, was underlined.

As mentioned in Mr. Panayiotou's address, the safeguarding of workers' rights is a key pillar of support for the Code of Industrial Relations. Proof of the value and effectiveness of social dialogue is, among other things, the incorporation into national legislation of the new European Union Directives aimed at improving working conditions by promoting further transparent and predictable employment, while meeting the needs of the labour market.

On the issue of wages, the Minister noted the importance of the introduction of the National Minimum Wage, through which some 80,000 workers have increased earnings, an increase which in some cases amounted to up to 30%. In an effort to further protect workers' wages, the Wage Protection Act has been amended, under the provisions of which the employer is required to pay wages by cheques or bank transfers, prepare and give each worker a payroll statement for each pay period.

Finally, listening to the changes in labour standards and related reforms, Panagiotou said that the Ministry has proceeded with a Bill, which has been passed and implemented to regulate the framework for the organization of telework.
