The great Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis said that the ideal teacher is the one who becomes a bridge for his student to cross, and when he has made the passage easier, he happily lets it fall down, encouraging his student to build his own bridges.
You are at this stage. Build your own bridges that will lead you to a professional and working future, having in your quiver all those weapons and tools that the teachers tirelessly gave you during your years of study at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT).
And you, dear professors, arm yourselves with strength, patience and perseverance to become another bridge for your future students.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am pleased to be here today to be a participant in this festive day, which has a different value and significance for all those involved. It has a different meaning for you, dear graduates, as you see the efforts of all your years of study paying off. For your parents, pride and pride in their children, as well as their own special labors are now found with emotion, a calm and a jubilation. And finally, for the academics, your professors, who bid farewell to yet another group of future young professionals, anxiously waiting to excel and stand out in a quite competitive professional environment.
This year is significant not only for you, the graduates, but also for the educational institution you attended, as 2024 declares and marks 20 years of the University's presence on the Cypriot educational map.
During these 20 years, the University has developed into a centre of high quality education and research, offering a significant number of programmes of study (Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral level), and implementing a series of research activities characterised by high quality and innovation. The presence and activities of the University over these 20 years have contributed greatly to the upgrading of higher education, not only in Cyprus but also in Europe.
Dear graduates,
The country invests in you, it invests in the new generation of people and professionals. In your hands and on your shoulders rests the prospect for a better future, through the continuous struggle for liberation, social and economic recovery.
Cyprus, the whole world, has experienced moments of anxiety for its very survival, periods of economic and professional insecurity, elements which have affected all generations, young and old alike. But the present and the future is in your hands, to shape it, to improve it, to change it. We as a state, as a government, as elders, will be with you, next to you, close to you, for as long as you want, to pass on knowledge, tools and experiences.
Congratulations to all and good careers.
