It is with great pleasure that I accepted your invitation to welcome today's 18th International Congress of Neurology organized by the Cyprus Society of Neurology, which is one of the largest and most renowned scientific institutions in the medical field and undoubtedly the most important event in the field of Neurology in our country.

It is a meeting place for distinguished neurologists from Cyprus and abroad who will have the opportunity to exchange views on all topical issues of neurology that concern them and to attend high level lectures on the latest developments in neurology.

The primary objective of the Conference is to educate, train and inform all neurologists and physicians of other specialties as well as health professionals involved in the treatment of neurological diseases in modern times.

Proper information on the status and consequences of neurological diseases is extremely important and of interest not only to neurologists but also to doctors of other specialties, health professionals and patients because neurological diseases are one of the major factors of mortality and disability.

Since its foundation in 1998, the Cyprus Society of Neurology has been promoting the principles of Medical Science with a variety of scientific events for its members as well as informative events for the public. It is an opportunity for a free exchange of views and expertise.

The Ministry of Health supports and will continue to support the efforts of the medical community to continuously improve the services provided to the suffering citizens and to maintain their health.

Ladies and gentlemen, for a modern state, health, the way it is managed and the level of citizens' relationship with it are inextricably linked to the quality of life, the services provided and the welfare state. In our country we have a high level of medical services and we owe this to the high level of training of doctors and other health workers in both the public and private sectors, as well as to the large investments made by the state and private initiative. I congratulate the Cyprus Society of Neurology for the excellent organization of this conference and wish it every success in its proceedings. Such actions, apart from their scientific, educational and professional value, are of particular national importance because they strengthen the national ties of our country with the participating countries.

I wish you all a successful conduct of your work and I hope that the discussions and exchanges of views will lead to innovative solutions for the improvement of health and prevention of neurological diseases.
