It is with great pleasure that I address today's signing ceremony of the contract between the two major semi-governmental organisations of our country, CYTA and AHK, for the supply of equipment, software and support in connection with the massive installation and operation of a smart metering infrastructure that will cover a large percentage of all electricity consumers.
This is certainly a very positive development, which, three years after the announcement of the relevant tender and the known difficulties, finally paves the way for AHK to proceed with this very important aspect of its ten-year programme for the development of electricity transmission and distribution networks.
I am sure that the dear Chairman of the Authority will then provide a detailed description of the project, which will cost a total of €50 million and will include, among other things, the installation of 400 thousand smart meters by mid-2027. The costs related purely to the infrastructure of the project will be covered by the national Recovery and Resilience Plan, while the cost of installation will be borne by AHK.
In total, a budget of around €120 million from European funds has been budgeted for the purpose of extending, upgrading and digitising the electricity networks. The implementation of the grid projects, together with the actions we are taking to promote storage systems and create the necessary infrastructure to remove our energy isolation, constitute one of the three pillars of our National Plan for Energy and Climate.
By way of indication, the other pillar concerns ensuring sufficient quantities of energy to meet the country's needs at the lowest possible cost through the sustainable and cost-effective exploitation of domestic Renewable Sources I also note in this regard that in the years 2024-2025 the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry and the Renewable Energy and Energy Saving Fund (RES and EE Fund) have announced or are expected to announce Grant Schemes with a total budget of €148 million euros to promote the use of RES and energy saving measures by households, businesses, local authorities and entities of the wider public sector.
In implementing these Plans we receive valuable assistance from AHK, to which I once again publicly express our sincere thanks.
Friends,
Our common goal for the transition to a green and circular economy, but also for the operation of a fully liberalized and sustainable electricity market, requires a modern, flexible and competitive AHK. Our concern should be first and foremost the best possible service for electricity consumers, who in the new competitive electricity market should enjoy upgraded services at the lowest possible cost.
The integrated intelligent infrastructure system project, for which perhaps the most important part is being awarded today with the signing of the relevant contract, is the key to the success of AHK's efforts to upgrade the quality of its services. I believe that the cooperation and partnership between AHK and CYTA will ensure the timely implementation of the milestones that have been set.
In conclusion, I congratulate AHK and CYTA on today's signature and assure you that our Ministry will be at your side, assisting you in your efforts to achieve your goals.
Thank you for your attention.
