It is with great pleasure that I am here with you, on behalf of the President of the Republic, to address today's Press Conference of the Cyprus Olympic Committee for the participation of our country in the 33rd Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024. With the motto "On the road to Paris we are all Team Cyprus", just ten days before the start of the Olympic Games, we all feel proud that the team of athletes who will represent Cyprus has grown and reached the number 15.
The efforts and sacrifices of our athletes and their perseverance for success and high performance bear fruit, are recognized and rewarded. Thanks to them, they have managed to stand out and achieve great distinctions and are rightly ranked among the highest level of athletes from all over the world. The culmination of their efforts over the years is their qualification for the Olympic Games. Our small Cyprus is proud of its athletes, since through their participation they will once again be present in this great sporting event. Fans all over the world are eagerly awaiting this great event, which embodies the great values of sport, unites peoples, bridges cultures and highlights man himself as the centre of global interest.
As a State, we must support in all ways both the enormous effort of our athletes participating in the Olympic Games and the entire range of efforts made for the further progress and development of Cypriot sport. In this direction, as a Government we adopt a targeted policy, in the context of which we seek to continue the evolutionary course of Cypriot sport, for the benefit of our athletes and all our people. Through our plans and taking into account the suggestions of all stakeholders, we aim to implement actions for the utilization of athletes/athletes - role models and the promotion of new talents, the development of lifelong exercise programs and mass sports, the enrichment of curricula at all levels of education with the principles and values of Olympism and the adoption of policies that contribute to the provision of equal opportunities for sports and the integration of people with disabilities in sport. In addition, recognizing the great importance of the quality of sports venues, we promote the upgrading and further utilization of our sports infrastructure, with the objectives of strengthening the effort for mass sports, supporting championship sports, attracting international events, promoting sports tourism and their more effective use by organized groups. Organised groups in the field of sport, and in particular sports federations, are one of the most important pillars for the development of sport in our country. For this reason, we are upgrading the way of financing sports federations and their athletes, based on specific data and criteria.
Dear athletes,
You are the healthy role models and at the same time the ambassadors of the high ideals of sport. You assure us through your struggle and effort that you can act as a shield against modern challenges to support and establish a healthy society. Your effort and hard work is rewarded with the ticket of participation. We are already proud of you. I wish you every success and assure you that: "On the road to Paris we are all Team Cyprus". We look forward to cheering you on both at the opening ceremony and in the various sports in which you will be participating in the coming time in Paris.
