I am particularly happy to be here today, at Palouriotissa Lyceum, one of the historical educational institutions of our country. A school that has played and continues to play an important educational and training role, interweaving its operation with both the promotion of education in our country and the preservation of our national, historical and cultural identity.
Over the years, Palouriotissa Lyceum has welcomed and promoted great teachers, students and pupils, who have distinguished themselves for their performance, ethics and action, as well as their special contribution to the progress of society and the struggles of our country for freedom. The location of the school, moreover, in one of the most remote areas of our country, links it closely to the trials and tribulations that arose before and after the tragic events that marked our country in 1974.
It is precisely this significant contribution and the multifaceted contribution of the school to the historical and intellectual life of our country that the work of collecting and preserving its educational and cultural treasures, through the creation of a historical archive and museum, highlights. Already, through the cooperation of the school's management, the competent archive and museum committee, the teachers of photographic art and other qualified collaborators with the Scientific Research Centre, the rescue, collection, recording, classification, conservation and digitisation of the school's printed, photographic and other material is proceeding intensively.
This ongoing effort is gradually bringing to light the valuable collections of archaeological finds, folk art, paintings and prints that the Palouriotissa Lyceum possesses, while at the same time creating an archival space for the safe storage of all this valuable material. In this way, this unique wealth becomes accessible and usable, not only for the educational and student community of the school, but also for the general public, for teachers, academics, researchers, scholars and lovers of our history.
Particularly important is the digitization laboratory created at the school by the Centre for Scientific Research, since this contributes decisively to the realization of the major goal that has been set, through the Governance Programme, for the creation of an Archive and, by extension, a Museum of the History of Cypriot Education, with the aim of preserving and promoting the archival wealth that other historical schools of our country possess.
The work that is currently being carried out with zeal at Palouriotissa Lyceum leaves as a valuable legacy the knowledge and understanding of our historical events, contributing to the acquisition of political, cultural, national and social self-consciousness. As the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, our aim is to highlight and exploit this valuable heritage to the maximum extent possible, passing it on to our children, our young people and to each individual citizen.
To this end, in the context of our broader educational policy and recognizing the value and importance of the operation of the Palouriotissa High School, our priority is to preserve and promote the great national, spiritual and cultural wealth that it possesses. Therefore, the creation of a modern museum, which will meet all museum and educational standards, will be supported in every possible way by our Ministry.
At the same time, it is our concern to safeguard the continuation and upgrading of the Palouriotissa Lyceum's offer as a school of secondary education. We aim to create a safe, modern and functional learning environment in all of our schools so that the time spent in school is creative, productive and enjoyable. It is in this context that we remain committed to the implementation of the coherent policy adopted by the Government on Education and the implementation of our plans as a Ministry, in close collaboration with all stakeholders.
I congratulate the management, teachers and other staff of the school for the work they are doing. In particular, I would like to express my congratulations for the initiative, perseverance and will that they, together with the other partners and the Centre for Scientific Research, have shown for the realization of the project of collecting and preserving the educational, cultural and historical treasures of the Lyceum.
Addressing you, dear teachers and especially you, my dear children, I would like to emphasize that your service and attendance, respectively, at this historic school is a great honor. I am sure that this pride that you rightly feel will be another motivation for you, which, like the vision of the founders, benefactors and great teachers of the school, will push you to contribute, through your actions and activities, to the progress of our society and the prosperity of our country.
