With feelings of great joy and pride we gathered today at the Naval Base "Evangelos Florakis" for the ceremony of awarding the degrees and insignia of the 84th School of Submarine Destruction. The ceremony, which caps a long period of arduous and demanding training and is a milestone event for the rest of the lives of the young Frogmen of the National Guard.

Young Submarine Destroyers,

I assure you that I am well aware of the requirements and qualifications needed to join the Submarine Destroyers Unit (SDU) and successfully complete the extremely demanding training. I am also well aware of the feelings that you and your loved ones are going through at this time. The distinctive badge that you will now proudly wear on your uniforms was not given to you as a gift. You have earned it by much sweat and perseverance, and I am sure that if it should ever become necessary, you will honour it to the last. Today, you stand before us with pride as you officially join the Submarine Disaster Unit, one of the most elite units of the National Guard. In the forces of the Frogmen, where only the mentally and physically strong manage to cope. You take the baton with honour from the previous series of Submarine Destroyers. From those who chose the difficult, and successfully accomplished their mission under any condition. Anywhere and anytime.

As of today you are charged with an important responsibility. To showcase the skills you have acquired in a Unit that requires from those who serve it boldness, dynamism, physical and mental strength, and total commitment and dedication. You know that the path you will be called upon to follow will not be easy. Your difficult training will continue uninterrupted and will be more demanding. Always remember that successes do not occur by chance.

On the contrary, they are the result of systematic preparation, dedication and hard work. Those who devote time and energy to learning and improving their skills and abilities become better and are often in a better position to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. Continuous preparation and self-improvement create an environment where success is more likely and challenges are easier to meet.

Be aware that our country needs young people like you. Disciplined, conscientious, with high moral and mental fortitude. Your performance so far is a guarantee of your success. The National Guard, relying also on your contribution, remains committed to its mission.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the contribution of the National Guard Navy to humanitarian missions and Search and Rescue operations. In the various calls for assistance the Navy is ready to act wherever required within the area of responsibility of the Republic of Cyprus.

In this context, the Council of Ministers, recognising the important contribution of the Navy personnel, approved, following a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Defence, Regulations establishing for the first time the payment of a navigation allowance to members of the Army of the Republic, belonging to crews of warships, when they are at sea, at anchor or at anchor outside the territorial waters of the Republic of Cyprus.

As the Ministry of Defence, in the context of the mission that the State has entrusted to us to protect our citizens and ensure the defence of our homeland, we have set as an objective the continuous upgrading of the National Guard's strength, while at the same time adapting to the requirements of the modern operational environment. By maintaining our defence capabilities at a high level, through the strengthening of the deterrent capability of the National Guard, we aim to safeguard our national security and territorial integrity.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I express my warmest thanks and congratulations to the Commander of the Submarine Disaster Unit, the Commander of the School, the instructors and all those who, demonstrating excellent professionalism, contributed to the comprehensive training of the new Frogmen.

Congratulations are also due to their families and loved ones, who are here with us today to admire them, who raised them in an exemplary manner, equipping them with values and ideals, while supporting their choices.

Young submarine destroyers,

I congratulate you once again on your success, wish you success in your goals, be healthy and have every personal and family happiness.

The State will be at your side.

Thank you.
