It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to today's presentation, which marks the launch of the project "Extension of Ultra High Capacity Networks in Underserved Areas", which is included in the Recovery and Resilience Plan, and whose implementation has been undertaken by Cyta, following a relevant tender procedure.
This is a key initiative, which is part of an integrated government planning, and which aims to cover the whole of Cyprus, including rural and remote areas, with high-speed fiber optic networks, thus ensuring equal access and the possibility of active participation of all citizens without exception in the digital economy.
Today we are taking another important step towards the transition of Cyprus to the Gigabit Society.

Today we are taking another important step towards the transition of Cyprus to the Gigabit Society. Both as a result of government interventions and significant investments by telecommunications providers, our country has gained significant ground in recent years in terms of upgrading its telecommunications infrastructure and services. The progress that has been achieved is also reflected in the relevant Cyprus Digital Decade Report for the year 2023. It is worth recalling and highlighting that Cyprus was the 1st country in Europe to achieve full population coverage of 5G mobile connectivity.
With the completion of the large-scale project we are announcing today, which is expected in early 2026, we aim for Cyprus to become the first country to achieve 100% population coverage across the entire spectrum of ultra high-speed, mobile and fixed connectivity.
Alongside this connectivity project, the Deputy Ministry is subsidising new high-speed subscriptions and upgrades, investing a total of €10 million and covering 82,000 households.
As a Government, we have announced an ambitious plan to substantially upgrade the state's digital infrastructure and the services we enable for citizens, professionals and businesses. To make this more meaningful, everyone should be able to use them equally. And this is perhaps the most important thing that this investment offers.
Universal access to Gigabit speeds is also a prerequisite for learning, working and doing business, and is directly linked to the broader social policy of the state, as it contributes to the regeneration of the countryside and its transformation into an attractive place to live for young families, investors and entrepreneurs.
Finally, the implementation of the project strengthens our efforts to attract productive investment in the field of Cyta has always been a highly reliable and valuable partner in every government effort and I want to say so publicly. I am confident that together - also in this case - we will achieve our goals and substantially strengthen the digital maturity of our country, for the benefit of every citizen and every business.
