We are here tonight for the presentation of Silvio Augusto Rusmigo's book "Aspelia Naturalis", a truly remarkable publication that is the result of 15 years of exploring and photographing the unique beauty of the landscapes and monuments of Cyprus. The book depicts the unique natural and cultural wealth of our land from the coast to the mountain peaks of Troodos.
The ancient Roman writer Pliny the Elder mentions in his book "Naturalis Historia" that, according to Xenaxagoras, "Aspelia" was one of the ancient names for our island "Aspelia Naturalis". Cyprus and its nature, then, in free translation, is the subject of Silvio's book, who through his photographs and texts connects the past with the present and monuments of people with monuments of Cypriot nature.
Silvio, as stated in the subtitle of this well-crafted publication, records through his lens images of the vast and the unexpected, while in the accompanying texts he provides personal narratives and experiences, as well as historical and environmental references. His aim is to inspire the reader to explore the world of Cypriot nature, cultural heritage and the countryside, beyond everyday formal contact with the environment around them.
The Deputy Ministry of Culture encourages every effort that promotes culture through all forms of art, in all its manifestations, recognising the important role it can play in the progress, development and cultural literacy of society. In this context, among other things, we have set as our objective the development of all the arts and the support of all the professionals who serve them. A key role of the Deputy Ministry is also to preserve and promote our rich cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, and to highlight it.
The "Aspelia Naturalis" publication, through a special visual and technical approach, makes a major contribution to the promotion of our cultural product and our natural wealth and thus supports us in achieving this objective.
For this reason I would like to thank Silvio and congratulate him for his long-lasting action for the study and promotion of our natural and cultural landscape, as so perfectly rendered in this particular work, as well as in his overall work.
Dear Silvio, welcome to the new book!
