It was with great pleasure that I accepted the invitation to participate in the evening ceremony, organized by the magazine "Nea Epochi", the oldest cultural magazine, which has been continuously published in our country since 1959, and to present the prizes to the winners of the short story competition for 2023, a competition that has now become an institution.

Over the years, the magazine has highlighted the work of people of culture and made a decisive contribution to raising the cultural level of the country and society. By taking the initiative to introduce the short story competition last year, the magazine rewards quality writing and, by extension, the social contribution of writers. It is therefore very encouraging that the competition has been embraced by the public since its inception.

The Ministry of State for Culture aims to promote creative expression and in collaboration with cultural institutions such as Nea Epochi, we wish to build an environment that is conducive to artistic development, progress and the well-being of people of culture.

The Ministry of State for Culture aims to promote creative expression and in collaboration with cultural institutions such as Nea Epochi, we wish to build an environment that is conducive to artistic development, progress and the well-being of people of culture. It is in the context of this objective that the bill, entitled "The Artists' Registry and Artistic Sponsorship Establishment Act of 2024", which aims to institutionalise the social and professional status of the artist and which has recently been subject to public consultation, is part of this objective.

In order to achieve our strategic plan to promote cultural creation and its quality enhancement, we have also strengthened our sponsorship programmes and intend to review and improve them before launching them next year. One of our sponsorship programmes, which is already in place, is the "Support for Periodical Publications of Cultural Content" Project by the Department of Contemporary Culture of the Ministry of State, which assists in supporting the publication of periodical publications, which publish articles, studies, reviews, analyses concerning and/or promoting issues, forms and events, primarily related to the field of Cypriot literary and artistic creation, history and cultural heritage of Cyprus.

At the same time, in the context of our objective to strengthen cultural education and training, an Action Plan is being prepared for the implementation of programmes to cultivate cultural literacy, promote literacy and implement measures to encourage our young people to get closer to the cultural events of the country.

Dear friends,

On the occasion of tonight's award ceremony, which is also a celebration of literature and literature, I would like to address all the participants in the competition and encourage them to continue their literary work.

In conclusion, I would like to congratulate both the winners of the competition and the editorial committee of the magazine "Nea Epochi" for organizing the short story competition, as it promotes quality literary creation, which is so much needed in our society today. I would also like to thank the jury, who spent valuable time evaluating the texts.

Congratulations to all of you for your overall contribution and best wishes for the continuation of your work.
