It is with great pleasure that I am here today to celebrate Book Month with you.
To begin, I would like to congratulate the Cyprus Union of Librarians and Information Scientists (KEBEP), which this year celebrates Book Month with us, together with the Ministry of Culture, through the programme of the Department of Contemporary Culture "Literary Routes in Libraries".
"Alice and Philip" will take us on a journey to the magical world of libraries. We would like to thank the educational program company Little Odysseus and the teacher Mrs. Angeliki Halchioopoulou for their cooperation, as well as the Christina Apostolou Foundation for the co-financing.
The action will be transferred to many libraries in Cyprus with the aim of this year's World Children's Book Day message to "travel with the wings of imagination" to the children of Cyprus, cultivating philanthropy and revealing the magical world of the library.
"The library is not just a place to read books, but a place where we learn to co-exist and love each other."
"Bad libraries create collections, good libraries create services, great libraries create communities." We invest in great libraries, and by joining forces I am convinced we will succeed.
Our goal:
[*]To create open and welcoming libraries that promote good mental health by implementing programs and creating spaces for entertainment and creative expression. [*]To empower readers to be able to choose, express opinions, have a voice, develop social imagination and social action. [*]To emphasise the role of libraries, the development of reading and research skills, and open access to electronic libraries.
Through the programme of the Ministry of State for Culture of the Department of Contemporary Culture "Literacy Routes in Libraries", lectures, presentations and workshops will be organised this year by the seven participating municipal and community libraries, in cooperation with as many other school libraries, seminars, literary meetings of authors with the public, visits of schools or groups of children to the libraries to attend structured interactive literacy programmes, activities with parents, adults and seniors and, above all, activities aimed at socially disadvantaged groups. The programme will culminate in a conference, where we will share our experience and exchange good practices in order to gradually build a network of those great libraries that create communities of reading, research and learning.
We believe in literacy because it contributes to personal development and is a refreshing intellectual experience. It provides the opportunity to explore new ideas, perspectives and worlds, positively influences one's knowledge, intellectual development and communication, and is an educational and cultural goal.
Dear children, great stories are being born all the time. Stories that want to be heard, read, traveled, made into pictures, shelved, dusted, crumpled, stained by hands, wet with the tears of lonely souls. Stories are born of free souls and with their words they make even freer souls.
Take the red thread of stories and weave the blanket of comfort in the hard times we are experiencing. To make it a magic carpet to fly above the clouds.
With the power of stories you can live better. Better than the heroes who simply lived well.
Love literature. Always be hungry for words. Put books in your life. Because books are our home and our journey. Because books are our freedom.
Yes, that's the biggest secret. And, yes, I want you to share it with everyone. It is the gift I am giving you to give it.
I wish many wonderful book trips to all of us.
Note.
