The competition for the sustainable operation of the tourism industry in Cyprus was organized by the Centre for Studies and Research AKTI with the support of the Coca-Cola Foundation.Cola under the auspices of the Office of the Environment Commissioner
I was pleased to accept to attend today's event to award twenty small tourism businesses, as highlighted in the framework of the "Zero Waste HoReCa 2023" Competition, organized by the Centre for Studies and Research AKTI with the support of the Coca-Cola Foundation, for the innovative actions they have implemented towards their green transition.
At a time when the challenges of climate change are becoming increasingly critical and its impacts are affecting the environment, the economy, human health and society, the importance of initiatives such as the "Zero Waste HoReCa Champions Awards" cannot fail to be recognized.
The tourism sector and hospitality and catering businesses play a leading role in the economy, society and business world of Cyprus through the food services they offer, the opportunity for recreation and social interaction. However, their activities also have a serious impact on the environment and the well-being of citizens. Distinguished businesses in the Competition are rewarded for the path they have already taken towards zero waste and other actions to minimise their environmental footprint by reducing waste production, saving energy and water and changing the terms of supply for a green supply chain. These actions also demonstrate that a successful business and sustainability can co-exist and grow together.
I am pleased with the progress being made, but there is still a long way to go. The global environmental crisis requires environmental awareness, instilling good habits, implementing innovative practices, cooperation and commitment from all of us.
My sincere congratulations to the winning companies and to those involved in the competition and today's award ceremony, the AKTI Centre for Studies and Research in collaboration with the Coca-Cola Foundation.
In conclusion, I would like to mention that the Office of the Environment Commissioner and I personally will be a supporter and companion in every initiative and action that aims at small or big changes for the protection of the environment that will be for the benefit of all of us, society and our planet.
