To each and every one of you graduates, on behalf of the State, I extend our sincere congratulations. This is a day that marks the culmination of hard work, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to the attainment of knowledge and excellent professional training.
I would also like to acknowledge the invaluable support provided by your families, friends, loved ones and professors. They have stood by your side, offering encouragement, understanding and support during difficult times. Their belief in your abilities has been a key source of strength for you to successfully complete your studies.
Dear all,
In modern societies, education contributes to the formation of the individual, the improvement of his/her cognitive level, the development of his/her critical thinking and his/her ability to make the best possible decisions, while increasing his/her productivity and income. However, the economic benefits of education are not limited to individual economic units but spread throughout the economy. As early as the 18th century, the English philosopher-economist Adam Smith stressed the contribution of education to the progress of a nation's economy. The social benefits of education in terms of raising the social and cultural level of a country are also important. As Rigas Feraeus very aptly stated "Out of letters is born the progress with which free nations shine."
Undoubtedly one of the most important developments in Cyprus in recent decades is the development of the university education sector, which has emerged as an important pillar of the economy and has great potential for further growth.
The operation of many prestigious university institutions in our country has managed to secure not only economic benefits but also to reverse the brain drain, attract foreign investment, stimulate demand and tourism.
The number of students in Cyprus has almost doubled in the last ten years. This rapid increase in the number of students on our island is the result of years of systematic and hard work, both on the part of the state and on the part of university institutions. Higher education in our country operates in accordance with the framework for ensuring academic quality and excellence. The recognised Greek- and English-language programmes of study are capable of attracting the interest of students within and beyond national borders. Our universities excel in research, and employ experienced and internationally renowned academic and research staff. Several of them are ranked high in global university rankings. Moreover, our universities' participation in mobility programmes and student and faculty exchanges with countries within and outside the EU increase their eligibility from third-country nationals. Our country is also a safe destination, easily accessible for third-country nationals.
Dear graduates,
In a constantly changing world, you may not know with absolute certainty what you will do for the rest of your life. But you will have a vision and you will strive for it. You will try to reach your goal as quickly as possible. Certainly with small detours along the way, with small changes to your original plan, which may be temporary, but may, perhaps, steer you in a different direction, for your own good.
But have that vision. A vision that, however distant it may seem, will be the pinnacle you will want to conquer. Along the way you will encounter many obstacles. Don't get discouraged and don't give up. The road to Ithaca is not easy. There will be many Lysstrians, many Complications and many Cyclops on your way to your ideal goal. Galileo made hundreds of lenses until he made this one, which, when placed in a paper tube, saw the world with new eyes and revolutionized science.
Follow your own dream. Build and shape your own life based on your own "wants" and needs. Then you will be truly happy.
To conclude my greeting, I would like to congratulate you once again on the completion of your studies on the occasion of today's graduation ceremony and sincerely and wholeheartedly wish you every success in your life. May you be healthy, creative, successful and follow your dream for your own good and that of the entire society. Because we rely on you, you are the future!
