It is with great pleasure that I address the Medical Conference of the Pancyprian Anti-Leukemia Association "ZOI" which is held in collaboration with the Cyprus Hematology Society. The Medical Conference is held within the framework of the Leukaemia Month events.

It is particularly gratifying and encouraging that the forces of Leukaemia specialists are joining forces with organised active citizens in society, who actively support our fellow human beings.

First of all, I would like to thank the co-organizers, the Pancyprian Anti-Leukemia Association "Zoe" and the Cyprus Hematology for providing timely information and awareness raising efforts for early, accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment in the field of leukemia. The cooperation of the Association with the Pancyprian Haematology Society repeatedly demonstrates the importance of the collective effort in the field of health and especially in the field of leukaemia.

In this fight for the prevention and optimal management of leukemia, each of us plays a significant role. As policy makers, it is our duty to ensure public awareness. It is also our duty to promote legislation and strategies, to ensure the quality of hospitals and to provide seamless support to health professionals within the framework of the General Health System.

I take this opportunity to thank in particular my fellow haematologists, both for their participation in the conference and for the high sense of responsibility they bear towards their patients and towards the national health services, keeping the bar of quality, information and collegiality high.

Leukaemias constitute a constantly evolving field of medical science, where efforts are focused on new targeted innovative drugs, new methods of identifying the risk for leukaemias as well as other, new treatments. In cases of leukaemia in children, the cure rate is as high as 90%, while in adults there is a long way to go for substantial improvement. However, science is making constant leaps and bounds, which fills us with optimism. Today's conference provides an opportunity for active participation and discussion of the new data concerning leukaemias.

I would also like to highlight the active participation of the Cyprus Anti-Leukaemia Association "Zoe", a voluntary organisation, which complements the work of the state, actively supporting our fellow human beings with leukaemia. An association that strengthens the relationship between doctor and patient in the daily struggle for a better and quality life.

Voluntary organisations offer their services without remuneration, not because their work has no value but because it is invaluable. For this reason, the Ministry of Health and the State express their appreciation and sincere thanks to all voluntary groups who offer their services to our suffering fellow human beings with love and solidarity. Thank you is too little.

Valuable partners,

The Ministry of Health aims to continuously improve the services provided to our fellow citizens. To this end, we look forward to close cooperation with all scientific societies and with all NGOs in an effort to receive opinions and formulate sound policies with the sole aim of safeguarding public health and improving the quality of life of our fellow citizens.

The implementation of the largest reform in our country in the health sector, the introduction of the GESY , on 1 June 2019, opened new horizons in the provision of health care.

The implementation of the largest reform in our country in the health sector, the introduction of the GESY , on 1 June 2019, opened new horizons in the field of health care provision. Our highest priority is to strengthen the GHS, continuously improve practices and correct distortions where and when they exist, so that it operates in an efficient and economically sustainable manner. In this way we will ensure universal access of our citizens to high quality health services.

Our goal is to create a new culture where beneficiaries and providers, through their responsible attitude, will protect the GHS, which is the property of the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus and a valuable legacy for future generations.

In conclusion, I would like to warmly congratulate all those who support patients facing this condition and participate in their own way, either through their scientific, humanitarian and voluntary activities. When the government supports the scientific community and voluntary organisations, the messages are always optimistic and the results are always positive.

I can therefore assure you that in the battle for the treatment of Leukaemia, you have the Ministry of Health as your leader and ally.

Thank you all for your participation in the conference and I wish you constructive discussions and meaningful results.
