It is with great pleasure that I welcome you again this year at the Presidential Palace to a beautiful event of giving back to human life and solidarity, which has become an institution on the occasion of the International Volunteer Blood Donor Day, which is celebrated every year on 14 June.
This year's global campaign with the motto: "20 years of giving: thank you, blood donors!" recognizes the importance of selfless blood donation by promoting a culture of regular blood donation to achieve universal access to safe blood transfusion.
This year's campaign thanks all those who answer the call for blood.
I congratulate the Bank of Cyprus SupportCY network and the Bank of Cyprus Group in general for organizing today's blood donation in collaboration with the Ministry of Health's Blood Center. I also congratulate you for your overall contribution to charitable causes.
Especially during the summer period, every effort to boost blood supplies is valuable.
Let me also express my gratitude to all the voluntary blood donors, who always respond to the call for blood donations, and to all those who are here today: the staff of the Presidency and the Presidential Guard, the members of the Police, the National Guard and the Fire Service.
Well done to all. Your contribution, as a sign of humanity and solidarity, gives life and lessons.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Voluntary blood donation is not just an act of love.
It is, first and foremost, a responsible attitude towards the unpredictability of life, but also towards supporting patients with a wide range of long-term illnesses. For this reason, those who can and do donate blood deserve our congratulations.
I want to tell you that I am proud of Cypriot blood donors who respond to the needs of society with willingness, ranking Cyprus among the 62 best performing countries in the world, and in first place among the European Union member states with a full supply of blood from voluntary donation.
Voluntary blood donation is a special kind of invaluable contribution to our fellow man, which not everyone can do. Today, in view of World Blood Donor Day, we also honour the Cypriot blood donor, Support CY and all the organisations or individuals who, together with the officials of the Ministry of Health and OCYPY, organise blood donations and offer their blood individually.
In conclusion, I would like to say that this volunteer blood donor is also a positive person among those we look for every day to encourage us to continue, through his/her capacity or role, his/her struggle, which we hope will be a beneficial struggle for the society, not only for the individual.
This is what we all do here at the Presidency for a Cyprus that, fortunately, is changing. A Cyprus of giving and solidarity with our fellow man.
Thank you. Good strength.
