It is with great pleasure that I accepted the invitation to address the 16th Annual General Assembly of the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI) in my capacity as Commissioner for the Environment.
I consider the contribution of the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative very important and I congratulate you in particular for your work. Tourism is one of the most important industries on our island that can contribute not only to the standard of living but also to cultural exchange.
The tourism industry is a cornerstone of Cyprus' economy. Unfortunately, however, we observe phenomena related to tourism that have a negative impact on the environment, the landscape and our culture.
The role of the CSTI is very important for the Cypriot tourism events, it can contribute to the sustainability of the tourism product and the sustainability of the coexistence of the population in Cyprus with foreign tourists.
The Deputy Ministry of Tourism has developed a strategy for alternative tourism, outdoor tourism, business support and crafts, steps that are very important.
In conclusion, I would like to assure you that I have been informed about the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Office of the Environment Commissioner and the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative, by my predecessor, on 12/05/2023 and valid for the period 12/5/2023 - 28/02/2028. On the basis of this Memorandum we can, at a meeting in my office, discuss ways of cooperation with the Environment Commissioner's Office and with me personally.
I remain at your disposal. Thank you and I wish you every success in your work.
