On Saturday 27/04/2024, on the occasion of the graduation of the new prison guards - handlers of specially trained dogs (K-9), the action and capabilities of these dogs were presented, as well as the way in which they can prove to be an extremely valuable partner of the penitentiary institution.

In all prisons of the world, dealing with the problem of importation and trafficking of drugs and other prohibited items, as well as being ready to suppress any incidents of violence, is a strategic challenge. In this challenge, as extremely valuable allies, the K-9 Teams provide invaluable assistance.

Sniffer dogs are trained to detect the presence of drugs, explosives and other prohibited items. The heightened sense of smell that these specially trained dogs possess, under the instruction of their experienced handlers, automatically turns them into valuable weapons and invaluable resources in the battle against the illegal trafficking of drugs and items in the Jail.

In addition, through special training they are able to significantly assist in immobilizing individuals in any violent incidents or riots and contribute substantially to their suppression.

The presence of detection dogs in Prisons helps to create a safer environment for both staff and prisoners. The successful identification and removal of prohibited items significantly reduces the likelihood of incidents and disturbances, thus improving the overall atmosphere within our correctional facility.

The establishment of the Special Dog Unit in our Prisons, its development, but especially its utilization, has demonstrated in practice that it is an effective strategy in reducing the problem of drug importation and trafficking within the Prisons. At the same time, they also act as a deterrent measure to discourage any would-be offenders, since they now know that the chances of being detected and ending up in a cell themselves are increased.

Those who had the opportunity to attend this ceremony were delighted with the abilities of our four-legged friends during a demonstration.

The Department of Corrections' Canine Unit (K-9) is an important and essential investment in enhancing both the security and operational readiness of the Department of Corrections. Therefore, the Department of Corrections management has expressed its readiness and willingness to further enhance and expand the Program.
