This is the largest quantity of drugs ever brought before the Cypriot courts
The Limassol Permanent Criminal Court today imposed a 23-year prison sentence on an accused person who admitted the offences of exporting and possession with intent to supply drugs (MDMA), weighing a total of 628 kilograms and 63.3 grams.
The drugs in question had been detected by the Australian authorities in the year 2019 in Cypriot barbecues ("fukudes"). The narcotic substances had been imported into the Republic of Cyprus by sailing vessel, placed in a specially designed cavity of the "fukus" and exported by sea container from the New Port of Limassol.
As the Court itself pointed out in its judgment, this was a major operation to import and export a huge quantity of drugs, where Cyprus was the transit point for the traffickers and the accused had contributed to the achievement of the purpose of the whole operation, with special reference being made by the Court to his role within the jurisdiction of the Republic of Cyprus.
The case concerns the largest quantity of drugs ever brought before the Cypriot Courts and therefore the most serious Cypriot drug-related case to date.
