On Monday, February 12, 2024, the Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court imposed a 12-year prison sentence on a defendant, who, following an admission, was found guilty of all eight charges he faced for the offences of grooming a child for sexual purposes and sexual abuse of a minor.
The case involved two separate minor victims and the Larnaca Permanent Court of Cassation imposed consecutive sentences of 5 and 7 years' imprisonment respectively.
The Court in its judgment, inter alia, stated. [...] sexual offences must be subject to a deterrent sentence for their suppression in view of their particular gravity as crimes, since they are not only against morals but also offend the personality of the victim. They destroy human dignity by degrading the human condition of the victim, often stigmatising his life and his mental world [...]."
The offences were committed between 2020 and 2021.
The proceedings were held in camera due to the nature of the case and the age of the victims.
On behalf of the Attorney General of the Republic, the case was handled by Ms Elena Cleridou Attorney of the Republic.
