On the occasion of the opening of Eleftherias Square to the public, Zaha Hadid Architects said in a press release that the square has become the focal point and gathering place of the city, hosting a variety of cultural events, while providing a space for relaxation and reflection for its neighbouring communities.
"With fluid forms constructed with expertise to the highest standards, the Square is among the final completed designs by renowned architect Zaha Hadid and is an excellent example of her signature style," the press release adds.
It is also reported that the team was led by ZHA Director and co-author of the project's architect Christos Passas, responsible for many of ZHA's landmark projects around the world. It is added that Christos Passa's work at ZHA has received the highest accolades from civic, professional and academic institutions around the world and that Mr. Passa saw the redevelopment of Liberty Square through a unique lens, as an architect with a detailed knowledge and understanding of Cyprus' rich history and cultural traditions.
Although Zaha Hadid did not live to see Eleftherias Square completed, Christos Passa confirms that Hadid would have been extremely proud of the quality of the new public spaces created for the residents of Nicosia, Zaha Hadid Architects adds.
