Alert from Police to young people to avoid firecrackers Risks of serious injuries Already seized more than 2 thousand firecrackers Increased patrols in susceptible areas What Police pyrotechnician Odysseas Papadopoulos tells the Cyprus Times

A coordinated operation by the police to crack down on the throwing of firecrackers in the run-up to Easter is underway, when there is frequent use, especially by young people.

Already the authorities have confiscated more than 2 thousand firecrackers, while patrols have been increased in susceptible areas such as parks, places frequented by young people at night and roadblocks.

Speaking to the Cyprus Times, police pyrotechnician Odysseas Papadopoulos noted that a prone area is Pyla, where it is known that illegal importation of firecrackers into the Republic is observed.

Police are appealing to parents and children to stay away from the dangerous habit, as it can cause serious injuries and even loss of human life.

"In recent years we have had several incidents where young people have lost their eyes or been maimed due to firecrackers. It is a shame for a recklessness to endanger our lives or a fellow human being," he said."

According to Papadopoulos, the dangers are multiplied when people make firecrackers, as no one knows when the unfortunate moment will come. "At the hour of explosion a firecracker can reach up to 400 degrees Celsius, only with this you realize how dangerous it can become," he noted.

During the Easter period and especially during Holy Week, he explained, a special action plan for policing the holy temples is expected to be developed, where a problem arises.

Finally, he called on parents to be suspicious and advise their children to stay away from a dangerous habit and not a custom that some people think it is.
