Written statement by the President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Anastasiades on the EastMed pipeline

The energy plans of the Republic of Cyprus will be implemented in the most appropriate manner, for the benefit of the well-meaning interests of the people of Cyprus and the friendly partner states, President Nicos Anastasiades said in a written statement regarding the EastMed pipeline.

In response to what is being said about the construction of the gas pipeline from the Eastern Mediterranean basin to the European Union (EastMed), the President noted that "the political will and decision of the three states, Greece, Israel and Cyprus was taken subject to economic viability studies, subsea seabed morphologies that would make a similar project feasible, always taking into account the environmental impact".

He added that the EastMed pipeline has been approved by the EU as a project of common interest, since it contributes to Europe's energy security, which is why the cost of the studies was borne by European funds.

"It is sad because some people are complaining that the project is being aborted", President Anastasiades said.

He also notes that the governments of the countries involved and the European Union have worked out alternatives in case the project is deemed unfeasible for whatever reasons.
