Scientists are trying to answer the questions of thousands of citizens who are positive to coronavirus despite their full vaccination

The beginning of the new year is developing into a period of an upsurge in cases of the Omicron mutation, which was also shown by the particularly increased number of cases during the holiday season. Among those whose PCR and Rapid tests came back positive, there are also fully vaccinated citizens who have either had the booster dose or it has been some time since the completion of the second dose of the vaccine.

According to the latest data, vaccination with the third dose is now a one-way street for immediate protection against the Omicron variant.

American researchers are attempting to answer the legitimate questions of citizens who wonder why they get sick after completing the vaccination process.

According to a scientific team from the University of Minnesota, many factors play a role starting with the emergence of the highly contagious Omicron mutation. The mutation infects people even if it does not involve serious disease, and its rise has coincided with the holiday and travel season in many places.

"Many people may mistakenly believe that COVID-19 vaccines can completely prevent infection however these are designed to prevent more severe infections," says Louis Mansky, a researcher at the University of Minnesota. Vaccines remain the main weapon in the COVID-19 treatment quiver especially for those who have had the booster dose.

According to the scientists, the two Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna doses or the one Johnson & Johnson still offer strong protection against Omicron. But, booster doses of Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna increase the levels of antibodies that help "fight off" the infection.

The Omicron variant appears to replicate more easily compared to previous mutations and if the infected person develops a high viral load then it is easier to transmit to others, especially the uninfected. Vaccinated people on the other hand are more likely to develop mild symptoms or remain asymptomatic, since full vaccination activates multiple immune system defenses making it very difficult for Omicron to bypass them.

As experts point out, the exhortations to keep everyone safe and healthy have not changed. Mandatory use of masks, avoiding crowds and strengthening the body through vaccination are essential.
