Major warning from World Health Organization

More than half of Europeans may be infected with the Omicron variant strain of the coronavirus in the next six to eight weeks, the World Health Organization warned today.

In the first week of 2022, more than 7 million new cases of covid-19 were recorded in Europe, more than double the number recorded two weeks ago, WHO Director for Europe Hans Kluge said during an online press briefing.

"At this rate, the Institute of Hygienic Measurements and Estimates (IHME) predicts that more than 50% of the region's population will be infected with Omicron in the next 6 to 8 weeks," he added.
