The Greek journalist was murdered inside the apartment in the Sheikh Zayed area west of the Egyptian capital of Cairo, with the details of his murder initially resembling a sex crime. On Monday, neighbours alerted the police as a bad smell was coming from inside Nikos Katsikas' apartment. Police entered the apartment and found his body and the public prosecutor was immediately called to the scene, who found that the victim had Greek nationality.

It did not take long for the perpetrator to be identified and as a result, police officers from the Giza Security Directorate in Egypt quickly got on his trail and arrested him. He confessed to the murder according to local media and revealed that he had met the victim at the restaurant where he worked and they had exchanged phone numbers. He also said that the journalist invited him to his house where he visited him a few days after their meeting.

According to the Egyptian website elrai.net, the perpetrator claimed in his confession that while at the victim's house, the Greek journalist asked the perpetrator about his living conditions with the accused complaining about his poor financial situation. Then, according to the perpetrator, the victim asked him to have sexual intercourse in exchange for some money, which the defendant accepted.

They had sexual intercourse and as the defendant allegedly said, the victim refused to give him the money the first time while the second time they argued and the perpetrator attacked him by hitting him and then threw him on the ground and stabbed him to death. The accused also admitted, according to the publication, that after making sure that Nikos Katsikas was dead, he grabbed the sum of 260 euros, 3 mobile phones and some of the victim's belongings and then fled the scene.

For its part, the prosecution announced that the body of the murdered Greek journalist was handed over to the Greek embassy, after the forensic service completed the autopsy to establish all the circumstances of the case.

The 56-year-old journalist had been a correspondent for the Athens News Agency since 2016 and had also worked for many years with ERT. Nikos Katsikas was an active member of the Greek community in Aegis[/B], founded the newspaper Phos in Cairo and edited the monthly edition of the Alexandrian Postman in Alexandria. He was also vice-president of the Greek Cultural Centre of Cairo.
