We disagree with the increases in the Limassol port, said the Transport Minister - "Efforts are being made to ensure that these costs are not passed on to the consumer"
The Government's disagreement with the increases that the companies managing the port of Limassol intend to impose on their tariffs, expressed the Minister of Transport, Yiannis Karousosos, noting that efforts are being made to ensure that these costs are not passed on to the consumer.
In statements in Limassol and asked to comment on the issue that has arisen, Yiannis Karousos said that "we do not agree with this increase in charges", however he indicated that "in the contract there is this clause and the companies can make these increases without being able to do anything except (exert) political pressure".
The government, he continued, will discuss with all parties involved and will decide in the coming days, any ways in which this increase "can be absorbed, to the extent possible, by us and not by the consumer."
At the same time, he indicated that all over the world there are indicators that bring about increases and "even in the Department of Public Works and the development projects that we have, a number of contractors use relevant terms that they have in their contracts and since the cost of materials, for example, has increased, they too are entitled to an increase in the payments that they have to receive."
The Transport Minister sent a message to all those operating in ports that "everyone must do their part to ensure that this cost is not passed on to the consumer", since, as he stressed, "it is not only the management companies that are involved in the increase in prices or charges, it is the whole cycle of operation of a port."
At the same time, he noted that the commercialisation of the Limassol port has brought huge benefits to the country's economy and has solved several problems that existed before.
"The service has improved, the service has improved and we are very close to completing the agreement on transit trade, where thousands of containers will now use Limassol as transit trade," he added.
