The opening ceremony for the Patras Carnival is postponed by decision of the municipal authority

The decision to postpone the opening ceremony for the Patras Carnival was announced by the municipality of Patras on Monday (10.01.2022). The reason for the development that is a blow to the Carnival of Patras is the fact that participants of the ceremony, sick with coronavirus.

"Closely monitoring the epidemiological picture of our country we readjust our programming, trying not to expose any fellow citizens, cooperating and working at the carnival. In the last few days the coronavirus has also hit the participants of the opening ceremony forcing us to postpone the event," the statement said.

The whole announcement for the Carnival of Patras

The developments regarding the pandemic with the rapid, terrible increase in cases and the infection of a large number of our fellow citizens, the new prohibitive measures and the climate of uncertainty, force us to modify our planning regarding the events of the opening day of the Patras Carnival and the workshops for students planned for January at the Old Slaughterhouses.

Although in the previous months it seemed that we could implement events that would appeal to all citizens, giving life to our city, the reality forces us to limit our actions and adapt to the harsh conditions of the pandemic. In view of the "omicron" mutation and the new strict health protocols from the competent authorities, we are obliged to modify our programme, showing respect for the difficult times our society is going through. Closely monitoring the epidemiological picture of our country, we are readjusting our programming, trying not to expose any of our fellow citizens, collaborators and carnival workers to danger. In the last few days the coronavirus has also hit the participants of the opening ceremony, forcing us to postpone the event.

If conditions allow, the city is ready to celebrate

The original plan was for all-day activities on 22/1/2022 with a carnival-like character of a popular celebration, in open public spaces in cooperation with our city's institutions. Unfortunately, however, we are forced to postpone all of the events until conditions permit their implementation. For the same reasons, the educational workshops planned for January in the area of the Old Slaughterhouses are also postponed.

The Municipal Authority, with a sense of responsibility towards the people of Patras and knowing the tragic consequences of the cancellation once again of the Carnival events, has proceeded with the planning of the main events with the aim, as soon as and if conditions allow it, the city will be ready to celebrate and welcome its visitors.

Those whose sole purpose is to damage the prestige and ethos of the Municipal Authority were quick to reproduce part of the recommendation to the Board, ignoring the relevant point: "The 2022 Patras Carnival is special for the second consecutive year due to the pandemic. In fact, today we are in an even more difficult situation as new governmental measures are expected to be announced which may be a reversal of our plans for the opening ceremony.

In the future new announcements

However, as K.E.D.D.P. Carnival of Patras we must proceed with the necessary administrative actions to ensure the implementation of an institution - opening ceremony - in case we are allowed by law and with absolute respect to the supreme value that is the health of our fellow citizens." The people of Patras know that the Municipality of Patras and the KEDIP - Carnival of Patras in the face of unprecedented circumstances proceeds to the maximum possible management of the finances of the enterprise for the benefit of the integrated entertainment of the Patricians and every visitor, having secured with every effort financial resources (search for state grants, extraordinary revenues, proper management and consolidation of the funds of the organization).

This is also known to those who handed over scorched earth to the Municipal Authority, who are now shamelessly exploiting the pandemic with populism, misinformation and outrageous lies, wanting to survive politically.

With the logic of supporting the city's leading institution and based on the epidemiological picture, we will proceed with the necessary administrative actions and will announce with press releases those events - activities we are allowed to implement.
