Can the third dose of the vaccine be given normally if you have contracted coronavirus but have no symptoms? What if you have come into contact with a positive case and the day for the booster dose is approaching?

There are increasing cases of our fellow citizens who shortly before the scheduled appointment for the booster (third) dose of the vaccine to prevent Covid-19 infection have contracted coronavirus due to the widespread spread of the Omicron mutation.

The question then arises whether or not to proceed with the vaccination.

The president of the National Vaccination Committee, Professor Emeritus of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Maria Theodoridou, answering this crucial question explains that, in case someone is an asymptomatic carrier of Covid-19 infection and the self or rapid test does not detect it then vaccination with the third dose can be done normally as "no negative incidence has occurred if it is a routine covid infection and the vaccination is done".

The same applies if we have come into contact with a positive case from 1 to 5 days before vaccination with the third dose.

"If we are talking about a symptomatic person, then the same applies," said Mrs Theodoridou during the regular briefing on the progress of the "Freedom" vaccination campaign last Monday.

And she added: "As long as there are no symptoms, there is no problem for vaccination, nor does immunisation interfere with the immune response of the vaccine. In fact, over time, in some cases, immunization can also contribute to a better treatment."

Finally, the president of the National Vaccination Committee clarified that if someone has symptoms that refer to the Omicron mutation (such as cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, etc.etc.) but the diagnostic tests do not show the Covid-19 infection then "I would say to wait a few days, in case this simple cough is enriched with other symptoms. So if you only have a cough, but you have done tests and they are negative, then you will proceed with the vaccination."
