Measures to protect the public during the Christmas and New Year holiday period The Police remains committed to serving society: Priority is given to safety and protection of the citizen

As every year, the Cyprus Police during the festive period of Christmas, New Year and Epiphany remains committed to serving society, in order to ensure the safety of the public travelling on the road network and to prevent any criminal acts against citizens (burglary and theft, offences against property, theft of cars, theft from cars) in public places and busy shopping streets.

During the festive period, police personnel will work tirelessly and tirelessly with increased patrols (motorised and on foot) and checks on main roads and secondary roads.

Traffic arrangements - Traffic on the road network

Due to the expected increase in traffic during the festive period, the presence of the Police on the main urban roads and especially on long-distance roads/motorways will be intense.

As of Thursday, December 23, nationwide traffic police checks to prevent road traffic collisions have begun, which will last until January 06, 2022. During the traffic police checks, zero tolerance will be shown to the four main causes of serious and fatal road accidents, which are speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, not wearing a seat belt and helmet and using a mobile phone while driving. Special emphasis will also be placed on other serious traffic offences such as negligent overtaking, reckless, dangerous or negligent driving, failure to overtake, failure to obey traffic lights, failure to maintain a normal lane, failure to give priority to a pedestrian at pedestrian crossings.

Measures to protect citizens' property

During the festive season there may be an increase in the commission of certain offences against the public. Therefore, the Police, as part of its preventive policy, urges the public to be particularly careful and advises citizens, when in public places and busy commercial streets, to follow the following:

  • When walking, carry money and credit cards in the front pockets of their clothing and it is advisable not to carry large sums of money, but only the bare essentials.
  • Persons carrying bags should not place all money, credit cards, passports, etc. in them, and it is preferable that the bag is placed in such a way that there is constant eye contact with it (e.g. cross-body).
  • In cases where they visit shopping centres and shops, they should be particularly careful when entering fitting rooms and should not leave their personal belongings exposed.
  • Be particularly careful where it is crowded and in dark and secluded places.

Citizens are also urged to take precautionary measures to guard their homes and shops more effectively as follows:

Homeowners:

  • When absent from the house, leave no evidence of their absence.
  • Ensure the house is securely locked and cooperate with people they trust in the mutual surveillance of their homes.
  • Not to leave keys on the locks, or even on the inside of the door.
  • Under no circumstances should money, jewellery, important documents or other valuables, which are essentially the prime target of offenders, be left exposed, and where possible they should be kept in a suitable safe.
  • Ensure that doors, windows and skylights are secured.
  • If they have an alarm system and/or closed-circuit television, ensure that they have set it up and that it has not been damaged in any way.
  • We also remind you of the dangers of publishing personal data on social networking platforms. Postings, which leave indications of absence from the home should be avoided, because unintentionally the owners target themselves, making them targets for burglars.

Store owners:

  • The cash registers of their stores should be open and free of content.
  • Not to leave large sums of money in unsafe places.
  • Not to leave their property exposed.
  • To ensure, if possible, that alarm systems are installed.
  • If alarm systems are installed, to check that such systems are up-to-date, reliable and have not been damaged in any way.
  • To check that such systems are up-to-date, reliable and have not been damaged in any way.
  • If alarm systems are installed, to check that such systems are up-to-date, reliable and have not been damaged in any way.
  • With regard to electrical appliances, record the serial numbers of the manufacturer (Serial numbers).

Theft of cars and theft from cars:

The Police once again stresses the multiple dangers of not taking precautionary measures for the safe keeping of motor vehicles.

In particular, the public is urged:

  • Not to leave bags, briefcases, mobile phones, laptops or any other valuables in visible places in the car, even if it is locked. The mere fact that these are visible to thieves is an incentive to commit theft.
  • Never leave the keys in the ignition or on the door, even if you will be absent for a very short period of time.
  • Always lock the doors and fully roll up the windows, even if the car is parked in front of his house in a safe place.
  • Under no circumstances should the car be in operation when the driver or other occupants are not in it.
  • Always park his/her car in places where there is adequate lighting. Dark or remote places make the work of thieves easier.
  • He should install an alarm in his car.
  • Where there is a garage, use it.
  • If it becomes necessary to leave items in the vehicle, they should be placed in safe places or in the luggage compartment.

Campaigns to crack down on offences of cyber bullying, electronic gambling and offences under the Private Security Offices Act

Due to the fact that, offences of cyber bullying, electronic gambling and offences relating to the Private Security Agencies Act, during the holiday season are increased, the Police have already intensified their targeted and coordinated operations nationwide.

In such cases, the Police will show zero tolerance, and in the event that citizens become aware of any information concerning the conduct of betting or electronic gambling, they should contact the Citizen's Line at 1460.

Immediate and timely information of citizens by the Police MCS

In order to provide timely and accurate information, the Police will continuously inform the public about important issues and news, as well as the state of the road network.

Therefore, citizens are urged to follow the Police Social Media (Police website (www.police.gov.cy), Facebook-Police Cyprus Official Account, Twitter, as well as the application for mobile phones).

We also remind you of our new News Website (http://www.cypruspolicenews.com) on which there is a continuous flow of news on various topics/events of current affairs, useful phone numbers, such as emergency response and assistance numbers, police station phone numbers.

Providing information to the Police

In view of the above, the public during the festive season is advised to be alert and cooperate closely with the Police, and in cases where they become aware of any information or movements of suspicious persons and/or vehicles during the day or night, they should immediately inform the Citizen's Line at 1460 or contact the emergency response numbers 112 and 199.

"We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, safe and healthy," it concludes.
