[Cyprus Times] "Useful" anything we gain in positive reports on Cyprus amid Ukraine, says C. Kolokasidis

On the Ukraine issue, the governments of Cyprus and Greece should be focused on the reminder of the Cypriot invasion, says presidential candidate George Kolokadidis, as he says anything we gain in positive references to Cyprus is "useful and redeemable".

"The Cypriot government continues to monitor and endorse European decisions on the Ukrainian issue. But these are not enough. Already statements have been heard from a Cypriot MP and from the Greek Prime Minister which show that even from the Greek side there is difficulty in recalling the Turkish invasion of Cyprus," he says.

He says that the two governments "should be focused on recalling the Cypriot invasion or, even better, on generalising the condemnation of the violation of international law so that the Cypriot case can be covered, at least indirectly."

The Western powers are attempting not only to condemn the Russian invasion but also to claim for themselves moral superiority, he says, adding that we should not allow them to appear so easily as protectors of the law "unless, for the sake of consistency, they also cover Cyprus."

"Whatever we gain in positive, even verbal, references is useful and redeemable. That should have been the job of both the Cypriot and Greek governments at this dramatic juncture. Not just blindly going along with the European 'partners'."
