"President Putin continues to escalate this war in an absolutely unacceptable way and we must continue to stop his actions in the strongest possible way," said the US Ambassador to the United Nations

"Unacceptable" is how the US describes the escalation of tension by Vladimir Putin who decided to put Russian nuclear forces on alert.

"I order the Defense Ministry and the chief of the armed forces general staff to put the Russian army's deterrent forces on special combat alert status," Putin said earlier during a meeting with the leadership of his country's armed forces, which was broadcast on state television.

US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, said the following in condemning the Russian side's move: "President Putin continues to escalate this war in an absolutely unacceptable manner, and we must continue to stop his actions in the strongest possible way."

The ambassador called the move "unacceptable" in her interview with CBS News.

Putin earlier ordered the Defense Ministry to put Russian nuclear deterrent forces on high alert following "aggressive statements" by NATO, Sputnik reports.

"As you can see, Western countries are not only taking hostile measures against our country on the economic level - I mean the illegal sanctions that we all know very well, but also senior officials of leading NATO states allow themselves to make aggressive statements towards our country," Putin said.

A few days ago Vladimir Putin had implicitly threatened to use nuclear weapons, saying that if the West intervened, there would be "consequences never seen before."
