US National Archives asks Justice Department to investigate Trump It is not clear at this time whether the Department will order an investigation into the matter

The US National Archives Service has asked the Justice Department to investigate how former President Donald Trump handled the issue of White House records, when he left office, the Washington Post reports.

The federal agency said it recovered 15 boxes of official documents from Trump's residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.

Also, aides to the Republican former president are looking for more to turn over to the National Archives. Agency officials suspect that Trump may have violated laws regarding the handling of government documents and have therefore contacted the Justice Department, the newspaper writes, citing two sources.

It is unclear at this time whether the department will order an investigation into the matter. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on this information.

The Presidential Records Act requires that written communications related to a president's official duties be kept.
