The US insists that Russia will invade Ukraine, while officials say there is a plan for arrests and assassinations
A plan for a direct Russian invasion of Ukraine is once again being mentioned by US officials, despite the fact that a few hours ago Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron agreed to a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
US officials spoke to Foreign Policy and claim, based on intelligence information, that Russia has a plan not only to invade Ukraine, but also to proceed with arrests and assassinations of people whose names are already on "lists."
What will be the objectives of this campaign? According to this article, four officials associated with U.S. intelligence agencies noted that Russia has lists of Ukrainian politicians and other prominent citizens of the country who will be targeted after the Russian invasion.
"As we have seen in the past, we expect that Russia will try to impose cooperation through intimidation and repression," said another official, who spoke to the same outlet on condition of anonymity.
Who will be targeted
"These actions, reminiscent of Russian operations in the past in which targeted assassinations, kidnappings - disappearances, imprisonment, torture, will most likely be carried out against those who disagree with what Russia is doing, and will include Russian and Belarusian dissidents in exile in Ukraine, journalists and anti-corruption activists, vulnerable populations such as religious and ethnic minorities, as well as people from the LGBTQI+ community," the official said.
Then, in the same Foreign Policy report, the latest moves by Russian military forces are mentioned, noting that the country has massed 150,000 troops on the border with Ukraine, while joint military exercises with Belarus continue following a deal with dictator Aleksandr Lukashenko.
